Mayfair
If you are seeking quintessential classic London like in the movies this is the neighborhood for you.
One of the most prestigious and luxurious neighborhoods in London, Mayfair is home to the largest number of five star hotels in London by far, sophisticated restaurants, private clubs and everything associated with the finer things in life.
Named after the two week May Fair which took place in the area between 1686 and 1764, the area has a long and rich history and is home to some of London’s most famous attractions from Fortnum and Mason to Bond Street (London’s most exclusive shopping street) and the Royal Academy of the Arts. And it is just a short walk to Buckingham Palace.
Whilst Mayfair may be known for its luxury, it is still a bustling and busy area with lots of quirky hidden gems like the world’s oldest hat shop Lock and Co, the home of male tailoring in London Jermyn Street
Five-star hotels in Mayfair
My Recommendation
The Stafford
My personal favourite 5 star hotel in London and the place to stay for history lovers. The Stafford is filled with unique features and it is one of the friendliest and most comfortable 5 star hotels in London. No wonder they have an exceptionally high rate of return guests.
The Connaught
Classic London Elegance and Sensibility
Claridges
Setting the Standard for Five Star Hotels in London since 1850. Everyone would stay at Claridges if they could afford it.
The Beaumont
Independently owned boutique feeling art deco luxury.
London Hilton on Park Lane
Once one of London’s top five-star hotels, alas, today, this is quite a tired property, although the location is outstanding, especially at sunset.
Top Attractions in Mayfair
Mayfair is home to some of London’s most exclusive shopping streets including Bond Street, Jermyn Street (the place to get a suit), Burlington Arcade and more.
Fortnum and Mason
My favourite place in Mayfair – one of the world’s most famous afternoon teas and, in my opinion, the best place to buy outstanding gifts from your London trip.
Royal Academy of Arts
Founded in 1768 by artists, this independent and privately funded institution is still led by some of the country’s most prominent artists.
The World’s Oldest Hat Shop
Lock and Co has been making hats since 1676 and created the iconic bowler hat.
Iconic Bookshops
Mayfair is home to two of my favourite London bookshops. Waterstones is 5 floors of book heaven with three cafes. Hatchard’s is the oldest bookshop in the United Kingdom and the official booksellers to the Royal Household.
Shepherd’s Market
Built on the original May Fair that gave the area its name, th little streets have been around since the 18th century. The area began as the height of fashion but later gained notoriety for gambling and prostitution. Today it is a vibrant area with some top restaurants (don’t miss Kitty Fisher’s) some great classic English pubs and interesting independent shops.
Need Your Hair Done?
I have been getting my hair cut and coloured at Four London since it first opened over 10 years ago and highly recommend it. Quite a few London based celebrities agree with me. Ask for Maleeka and tell her we sent you.
